My excitement goes together with my confidence and the luck of having already found a good number of people willing to help me for the several aspects concerning this journey, because their passing the word is working great.
Besides that, I’ve been working hard myself to develop a masterplan. You already know something thanks to the previous blog entries, but here’s a couple of main pillars everybody may find interesting for their own trips.

Where to sleep
The keyword is Couch Surfing. It’s a network of people from all around the world available in hosting travellers for free. Yes: for free. And you’re not even obliged to host this people back if you can’t/don’t want/don’t feel in the mood. Everybody in the CS network has got a profile where they say what they are available for, from a coffee and a little bit of showing around for the visitors to hosting them at their place for a certain number of nights. It’s incredible how many people are on Couch Surfing -from students to professionals to families- and I say incredible because in Italy we are not used to such an intimate and “sudden” concept of hospitality. For some other aspects we are great hosts, but due to several reasons we lack in this one. Anyway, talking about the CS website and how to use it, my advice is that the most important thing to do when looking for a host is setting the criteria “Order by: Last login date”, so that you are sure to meet people who are really paying attention to this and are quick in response, and “Has couch: Yes or definitely”, so that you will contact only those who are really active part of the network. I say this because hosts don’t usually like to be contacted more than 15 to 20 days in advance and (small negative aspect) sometimes the CS network message service needs some time (hours) to deliver messages. So, using my case as an example, with such a long travel plan and the uselessness to contact people too much in advance, you just don’t have a second to waste when it’s time to find an accommodation.

The idea of that website is great as well as the website itself (totally user friendly and with a nice layout, too), but the main problem is that people are not familiar with the road sharing concept yet, and it’s a pity. I had no precise idea either, but from now on anytime I have to do a trip, I will take a look at it, because if I am the passenger I can save some money and the same if I’m the driver, since it is usually not for free, even though normally cheaper than the average fares of other means of transport. And if you travel from/to Germany instead, Mitfahrgelegenheit is a smaller network but works really good. Germans are more used to that, whether drivers or passengers.
Not to forget are trains and buses, which due to the lower and lower prices of plane tickets currently make a lot of interesting special offers. Comparing the two, trains are generally more expensive but at the same time they offer a better travel quality, combining more comfort and more quickness; on the other hand buses have plenty of destinations more than trains. I think I will experience the both, and the most suitable websites for my case are respectively Rail Europe and Eurolines. If you want to buy tickets on-line, bear you usually have to do it not later than 8 days before your departure.
Unfortunately, totally to avoid when you travel on your own are car rentals: rental + gas + highway fees make the total really too expensive. And even if you travel in a group, something like leaving a 500€ deposit from your credit card in order to get a car can be annoying, as well as being extra charged if your trip is a “one way international” and you subsequently wish to leave the car at one of their rental offices abroad.

E non si è nemmeno obbligati a ricambiare l’ospitalità se non si può/ non si vuole/ non si è di luna giusta. Sul portale di CS ognuno ha un proprio profilo dove rende noto ciò per cui è disponibile, dal prendere un caffè e mostrare qualcosa ai visitatori fino ad accoglierli a casa per un certo numero di notti. E’ incredibile quante persone siano presenti in questa community –studenti come professionisti, famiglie, ecc.- e dico incredibile perché in Italia non siamo abituati a un concetto così intimo e “improvviso” di ospitalità. Per certi altri aspetti siamo persone di grande ospitalità, ma questo tipo ci manca per una serie di ragioni. Passando invece all’utilizzo del portale Couch Surfing, il mio consiglio è quello di impostare i criteri di ricerca su “Order by: Last login date” (ordina secondo la data dell’ultimo accesso), così da selezionare persone effettivamente presenti e rapide nel rispondere, e “Has couch: Yes or definitely” (divano disponibile: sì o assolutamente sì) in modo da rivolgersi solo ad elementi attivi all’interno del sistema. Questo perché a chi offre un divano non piace essere contattato più di 15-20 giorni in anticipo e perché (piccolo aspetto negativo) a volte il sistema di messaggistica del sito di CS richiede qualche ora per recapitare le richieste. Quindi, prendendo il mio caso come esempio, con così tante tappe davanti e vista l’inutilità di contattare troppo in anticipo, non c’è tempo da perdere quando è ora di concludere.

Personalmente ho pubblicato il mio itinerario su Road Sharing, anche se non credo troverò ciò di cui ho bisogno. L’idea del portale è grandiosa, così come il portale stesso (facile da utilizzare e graficamente piacevole), il problema è che però generalmente non c’è ancora una grande familiarità col concetto di road sharing, cioè di condividere un percorso in automobile con altre persone, e questo è un vero peccato. Nemmeno io avevo un’idea precisa di cosa fosse, ma d’ora in poi butterò l’occhio ogni volta che dovrò percorrere una certa distanza, perché che io sia il passeggero o il conducente avrò ad ogni modo possibilità di risparmiare, avvenendo ciò per lo più non in forma gratuita ma comunque ad un costo mediamente inferiore alle tariffe standard di altri mezzi di trasporto. E se invece viaggiate da/verso la Germania, Mitfahrgelegenheit è un network più piccolo ma che funziona molto bene. I tedeschi sono più abituati alla cosa, conducenti o passeggeri che siano.
Da non dimenticare sono treni e pullman, che dati i prezzi sempre più contenuti dei voli low cost propongono offerte speciali molto interessanti. Facendo un paragone, i treni costano generalmente qualcosa in più ma offrono migliori condizioni di viaggio in termini di comfort e rapidità; d’altro canto i pullman hanno invece molte destinazioni in più dei treni. Credo che nel corso del viaggio mi servirò di entrambi e i due migliori siti in proposito sono rispettivamente Rail Europe e Eurolines. Chi vuole acquistare i biglietti on-line presti attenzione al fatto che solitamente è possibile farlo fino all’ottavo giorno prima della partenza.
Sfortunatamente, totalmente da evitare quando si viaggia per proprio conto sono gli autonoleggi: nolo più benzina più autostrada rendono la cifra totale davvero troppo alta. E anche in caso di viaggi di gruppo, dover magari lasciare 500€ di deposito dalla carta di credito per avere la macchina non è la più simpatica delle cose, così come anche subire la tassazione extra se il viaggio è un “andata internazionale” e s’intende quindi consegnare il veicolo ad un autonoleggio estero del gruppo.
